For those of you who follow sports, which is almost all of my friends and readers… prepare to get jealous. Today I signed a job offer to professionally blog & photograph the upcoming FIFA World Cup, hosted by none other then my favorite country, South Africa.
As I am writing this post the countdown is currently reading 99 days 15 hours and 32 minutes till game time, and I am getting amped. Not only are they going to fly me there— and to every venue in the country— but they are paying me. Is this a joke? Have I died and gone to travel heaven?
To be clear- I got a job with a private company. (Not FIFA international)
I want to tell you all how I got this job, not to brag— but to encourage everyone to pursue their passion with diligence and confidence. Beacause without those KEY elements, I would not be going anywhere this summer, but back and forth to the beach… (not that that’s a horrible thing… but lets face it, a girls gotta pay the bills & satisfy an overwhelming urge to vacate this country briefly)
So, a few weeks back I heard from a tweet ( yes, I tweet. don’t judge. clearly its working out for me) that there was to be a large travel convention hosted @the staples center in downtown L.A. I thought to myself, “that sounds like fun…. and at least all the travel vendors & tour operators will be in the same room.” If one doesn’t need my services (as a blogger/promotional travel photographer) I step to the next booth advertising a destination that is on my list of “must go’s”.
I designed some cool business cards & a snap PDF card, and headed out towards the convention.

Keep in mind… The PDF is longer then the business card… Way longer.
Anyways…. I get to the convention, and immedateily notice that the first and largest booth inside is the SAA (South African Airways) sponsered World Cup booth.
Naturally, I slide on over and strike up conversation with one of the rep’s about how naive … (Forgive me) AMERICANS are to traveling to such a destination. Naive is putting it diplomatically just for respectful reading purposes. Anyone who has ever been to SA, knows that the World Cup is going to be great, but not without the complexities and complications of a third world country receiving 6 weeks of international spotlight.
The rep quickly realized that I had had the opportunity to travel there numerous times in the past, and inquired whether or not I was interested in going back… To which my response was, “when do you need me to fly out?” Working freelance and multi-tasking has its benefits…
From then on… it was simple negotiations. My point to everyone reading this post is that:
a) Social media i.e. Twitter is a great tool- don’t brush it off as just another means of stalking..( which it sometimes is) But its all how you use it.
b) BE CREATIVE
c) Push yourself
d) Talk a big game when you can back it up.
Usually others will be impressed by confidence. AT LEAST THAT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE.
So get out there and make it happen.
